Major League Baseball’s first use of a video replay this year – the first full season the technology has been used in MLB – worked pretty well, especially if you’re a New York Yankees’ fan.
Umpires in the Cleveland Indians-Yankees tilt on Sunday used the first video review of the season to rule that Jorge Posada’s drive to right field was a home run in the final matchup of a four-game series.
Posada was pinch hitting in the seventh inning Sunday when he sent a fly to right off Jensen Lewis. Grady Sizemore leaped at the wall, but the ball was deflected by a fan and bounced off the top of the wall and back into play.
Sizemore ran in to argue as second base umpire Phil Cuzzi signalled home run. Indians manager Eric Wedge came out to dispute the call.
The umpires then convened for several minutes before going to the video room through the visitors’ dugout. They returned and summoned both managers to explain the decision.
The two-run homer gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead and the pinstripers ended up cruising to a 7-3 victory.
The home run was one of 20 in the series against Cleveland, the Yankees’ first series at their new $1.5 billion ballpark.
